History

This VTI is situated approximately 12 kilometers away from the Angunukolapelassa town in the Weeraketiya Divisional Secretary Division of the Hambantota District. The buildings of the institutewas originally constructedfor a central school proposed under the new town to be constructed under Muruthawela scheme. However these buildings constructed by the River Valley Development Board were subsequently abandoned and were in a state of neglect over a period of time and upon being questioned about them at a meeting of the Hambantota District Development Council, it was decided to hand over these buildings to establish a vocational training school for children with disabilities. The former Assistant Director of Social Services of the Hambantota District Mr. Gamage played a leading role in this regard.

Accordingly, this school was established as a vocational training institute attached to the Department of Social Services by the then Minister of Social Services Hon. Asoka Karunaratne on the invitation of the Member of Parliament for Mulkirigala Hon. T.D. Francisku. Subsequently, as the Department of Social Services did not have the wherewithal to maintain the centre, it was placed under the purview of Sarvodaya which managed the institute for nearly 10 years before being re-acquired by the Department of Social Services on 09.02.1992 with the intervention of the Director of Social Services Mr. N.W.E Wijewantha.
