History

This training centre is situated in a picturesque setting surrounded by a ring of mountains in the Dumabara valley in the historic kingdom of Senkadagala in the upcountry.

The centre was started on 15.02.1963 in three small buildings on a land donated by a philanthropist and at the inception only a weaving course was conducted for the visually handicapped and today it has evolved to be a fully-fledged training centre conducting 10 courses using state of the art machinery targeting emerging marketing trends. The course are conducted by highly qualified, experienced trainers. The centre is equipped with facilities to offer residential vocational training to 100 male and female trainees.

The institute serves as a centre of excellence for children with special needs from all corners of the island committed to achieve their aims and objectives with a host of activities enabling them to improve their physical and mental strengths.

It is one of the most prominent institute under the purview of the Department of Social Services and a total of 2386 children with special needs have successfully completed their training courses and some of them have excelled at the national as well as international levels in the fields of sports and aesthetics.

They lead totally independent lives without being dependent on anyone and are making a significant contribution to the country’s economy.

Route

Wawinna junction is located 3.3 kilometers along the Panwila road passing the Wattegama town from Kandy. The training centre is situated 400 meters towards Panwila from the Wawinna junction.
