Department of Social Services set up  in 1948 under  the recommendation of Royal Commission headed by Sir Ivor Jennings and Department was entrusted with implementation of social welfare schemes for the disabled people.

This Department provide number of services to disabled persons and drug addicts to uplift their living conditions to lead a better life without being a burden to the family  and the community. Including new institutions, services,  and expansion of cadre , department has made it possible to provide better services and to coordinate  more effectively with provincial councils.

Vocational training

Vocational training is provided for the hearing impaired, physically handicapped, visually handicapped and mentally retarded youth between the ages 18 -35 yrs.

Training Programmes
Rehabilitation of the Disabled Persons

The objective of this project is to create an environment for the disabled people to protect their rights and to lead a life with dignity and full participation. 19 vocational training centres for persons with disabilities provide vocational training. The Department of Social Services directly runs 5 Vocational Training Centres as follows.
